Google teases Android 3.0.The“Entirely built for Tablets” Honeycomb

We heard rumours that 3.0 would be exclusively for tablets, as in not for smartphones, and that looks to be played out with the text "Entirely for Tablet" seen early in the video.

Moreover the best thing to say is that it looks nothing like Android. Sure, the browser is the same, and the Gmail app will be familiar to iOS, but trust us when we say there’s a lot of sexy UI in the video below to admire…and a lot of glowly blue lights, too.

Archos 7 Home Tablet revised, with Android 2.1 and a Faster 800MHz CPU

December 31, 2010 Leave a comment

The Archos 7 Home Tablet was something of a disappointment, and Archos has shipped Archos 70 and 101 since, but the firm isn’t done with the original affordable Android slate quite yet. We’ve confirmed with Archos that a "v2" revision is now shipping in Europe with three things the original lacked — an accelerometer, a relatively recent version of Android (2.1) and an 800MHz Rockchip CPU.The updated version has been spotted at Expansys for $200, which might actually might make it one of the best bang-for-the-buck tablets out there.

Android Market welcomes Direct Carrier Billing,AT&T get the first Taste of it

December 27, 2010 Leave a comment

The Android Market just got another update and now supports carrier billing in addition to the regular credit card payments. At this stage it only works for AT&T customers, but others are promised to follow shortly.

Of course, the lack of carrier billing isn’t the biggest problem of the Android Market by some distance. The fact that paid applications are still available in only a handful of countries is where Google really should focus their effort right now.

How to root Nexus S

December 23, 2010 2 comments

That was fast wasn’t it!!! After managing to unlock the bootloader, some hackers have now managed to get full root access on the Google Nexus S, only a few hours after its public launch.

For those of you who don’t already know, rooting your Android phone gives you full access to the file system. This will enable you to modify the phone’s firmware to whatever you want to have on your phone like skinning the UI, modding, overclocking CPU, flashing custom ROMs and so on.

Here is an image posted by well known Android developer clockwordmod, which shows Nexus S running custom Clockworkmod recovery.

First, reboot into your bootloader/fastboot mode. (Volume + Power Up, or adb reboot bootloader)

fastboot oem unlock

Then, install this recovery:

fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-herring.img

Then boot into Clockwork recovery and install the Superuser zip file (adb reboot recovery, or from fastboot choose recovery):

To install a rooted/insecure boot image (adb has root):

fastboot flash boot rootboot.img

ROM Manager support is coming shortly.

There’s a full how-to guide as posted on XDA-Developers.

Playstation Phone is known as XPERIA Play, comes on shelves in April.

December 21, 2010 3 comments

The long rumored Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone won’t be announced on CES next month, but on the MWC 11 in February. It will hit the stores in April under the name of XPERIA Play.

Quite some news, right? According to trust-worthy Pocket-Lint sources, the Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone will premiere on the Sunday’s Sony Ericsson press conference during the MWC in February. It won’t be released immediately, but will hit the shelves sometime in April.

The rest of the info just confirms the previously leaked specs and the dedicated gaming controls.

And while GSMAena were busy chasing whatever teasers they may find on the Sony Ericsson pages, more information has popped up.

It seems Sony Ericsson has registered the XPERIA Play trademark along with various XperiaPlay domains (.com, .net and .org). It’s not the reliable info we’ve been waiting for, but after the rumors about the XPERIA name we are willing to put some fate on these.

It appears that the XPERIA Play will be the big Sony Ericsson announcement on the MWC next year, and you can bet we’ll be there gathering as much info as possible about it for you.
